Ghrelin Effect on Beta Cell Function in Health and Disease

The purpose of this research study is to determine the role of a gut hormone (acyl ghrelin) in the regulation of insulin secretion from the pancreas and glucose disposal after a meal.  Participants will be asked to complete 2 testing visits at the Duke Center for Living campus, each requiring an overnight fast.  Two study groups will be enrolled in this trial – healthy controls and individuals with Type 2 diabetes. However, at this time we are only enrolling Type 2 diabetes participants.

Participants may qualify if:

  • Between the ages of 18 – 70 years
  • Treating diabetes with pills and NOT using insulin
  • BMI is ≤ 35.0
