Dr. Virginia Kraus was awarded an honorary doctorate of the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences at the University of Tampere in Finland. The honor, bestowed in August 2018, included a special hat and sword to protect the truth of science!
Her research focuses on the early treatment of osteoarthritis (OA) before serious damage occurs. A rheumatologist, Dr. Kraus leads large-scale research projects that are investigating the mechanisms of osteoarthritis, predicting the progression of the disease, and drug responses. The prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of the disease are important research topics because current therapies cannot remedy damaged joints or cartilage or delay the progression of the disease. She has identified OA biomarkers and new drug development targets and heads the DMPI Biomarkers Shared Resource.
She was recognized not only for her research, but her mentorship to the next generation of researchers. Read more about the award here.
