We are pleased to announce the winners of the 2023 DMPI Borden Scholar Awards, made possible by the very generous, recurrent gifts from Dr. Ernest and Louise Borden. In recent years, Dr. Borden has asked us to focus the $50,000 awards on work conducted by DMPI postdoctoral scholars. Accordingly, this year’s awards are granted to Dr. Pablo Morales (to the right in the photo), working in the laboratory of Dr. Rana Gupta, and Dr. David Lee (to the left in the photo), working in the laboratory of Dr. Jim White. Dr. Morales’ project, entitled “Legacy effects of cold exposure on adipose tissue plasticity”, seeks to understand mechanisms underlying the effect of transient cold exposure in young animals to improve metabolic health later in life, with a particular focus on the role of adipose tissue remodeling in this response. Dr. Lee’s project, entitled “A dual role for glutamine in muscle stem cell activation“, investigates the role of glutamine metabolism in muscle stem cell differentiation and expansion, work that has implications for possible new therapies for aging-induced loss of physical functions and frailty.
Congratulations to Pablo and David!
