We are pleased to announce the selection of two new DMPI Borden Scholar Awards for 2024. Made possible by a generous recurring gift to DMPI from Ernie and Louise Borden, these awards are given to outstanding postdoctoral trainees based on proposals reviewed by a senior faculty committee. Pictured are this year’s awardees, Dr. Andrew Cangelosi (left), and Dr. Adrian Epstein (right). Dr. Cangelosi is a fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Chris Newgard who is using novel genetic tools to understand how mitochondria from different zones of the liver vary in function, and how this relates to propensity for development of liver diseases arising in obesity and with aging. Dr. Epstein is a fellow/physician scientist in the laboratory of Dr. Eric Benner who studies mechanisms of neurological impairment in preterm infants. Dr. Epstein has developed an early detection method for inflammatory injury to neuronal stem cells, as well as a neonatal animal model that replicates this kind of injury, positioning him to test novel interventions for injury prevention. Congratulations to Andrew and Adrian on their awards, and best of luck with the work ahead!
