Metabolomics comparison of plant-based meat and grass-fed meat
Plant-based meat substitutes taste and chew remarkably similar to real beef and the 13 items listed on their nutrition labels make them seem essentially equivalent. However, research led by Stephan van Vliet, a DMPI postdoctoral student, indicates large nutritional differences between the two. The findings appear in an article in the July 5, 2021 Scientific Reports journal.

Three DMPI faculty members awarded Distinguished Professorships
Duke University has awarded distinguished professorships to 22 faculty members, including three DMPI faculty. Rasheed Gbadegesin, MBBS, MD has been awarded the Wilburt C. Davison Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics, Virginia B. Kraus, MD, PhD the Mary Bernheim Distinguished Professor of Medicine, and Deborah Muoio the George Barth Geller Distinguished Professor of Cardiovascular Disease.

Dr. Olabisi Receives Rising Star Award at Alma Mater
Dr. Olabisi is a 2009 graduate from the Einstein MSTP program. He completed his undergraduate education at The City College of New York, graduating summa cum laude with a degree in Biology. His research focused on the role of serotonin5HT2A and 5HT2C receptors in the actions of cocaine in the nucleus accumbens.
White-McGarrah lab identifies new connection between branched-chain amino acids and heart health
A team of researchers led by DMPI faculty members, Robert McGarrah and Phillip White of the White-McGarrah lab, have identified a novel pathophysiologic effect for a class of branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) metabolites called branched-chain keto acids (BCKA) in the heart.

Gbadegesin Named Associate Dean for Physician-Scientist Development
DMPI faculty member Rasheed Gbadegesin, MD, MBBS has been named associate dean for physician-scientist development and director of the Office of Physician-Scientist Development (OPSD), a Duke School of Medicine initiative focused on the training and support of physician-scientists. Dr. Gbadegesin has served as the inaugural faculty director of OPSD since 2018.
