Duke Medicine announced that Opeyemi Olabisi, MD, PhD, a researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital who investigates the use of patient-stem cell-derived podocytes as tools for uncovering disease mechanisms of APOL1 nephropathy, will be joining the DMPI and the Duke Division of Nephrology later this year.

Study reveals legacy effects of exercise
STRRIDE (Studies Targeting Risk Reduction Interventions through Defined Exercise) was an eight-month exercise study conducted from 1998–2003. Subjects were randomized to control or one of three exercise groups differing in intensity and amount. To determine if there were legacy effects, 104 subjects from the Duke site returned for testing.

Katie Garman, MD receives Borden Scholar Award
Katie Garman, MD is the 2019 recipient of the Borden Scholar award. The gift is a one-year award that allows selected DMPI faculty to test new, emergent ideas with translational implications for which alternative sources of funding are not yet available.

An EPA Oscar
Several DMPI investigators including Simon Gregory, Beth Hauser, Bill Kraus, Svati Shah, Colette Blach, Elaine Dowdy, and Carol Haynes, were honored with a rarely awarded Level I Scientific and Technical Achievement Award (STAA) from the Environmental Protection Agency for a series of studies conducted with a former graduate student, Cavin Ward-Caviness.
